Satpathy spins Orissa to win over Railways

Five-wicket haul in each innings by young off-spinner Sanjay Satpathy propelled host Orisssa to a 116-run win over Railways on the last day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group-A match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today.

This was overall 31st win in 157 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and first win in two matches against Railways. With this win, Orissa avenged the 9-wicket defeat they had suffered against Railways in their Ranji Trophy pre-quarterfinal match in Delhi, two years ago.

While Satpathy shone with a match haul of 10 for 120, impressive batting performance by captain Shiv Sundar Das, Pravanjan Mullick and BBCC Mohapatra enabled the home team clinch the emphatic victory.

Opting to bat, Orissa mustered respectable total of 218. Mullick missed a century two runs as he ran out of partners. His 225-ball unbeaten 98 was laced with nine hits to the rope. In reply, Railways were bundled out for 113 and conceded a first-innings lead of 105 runs. Returning to the team after a gap of one year, Satpathy captured a career-best five for 25.

In the second innings, a 214-ball 120 by Das (15x4) and an aggressive 57 (90b, 8x4, 2x6) by Mohapatra helped Orissa declare at 265 for five and set a daunting target of 371 before the opposition. The home team eventually clinched victory by dismissing Railway for 254 in the second innings. Satpathy claimed his second five-wicket haul of the match, conceding 95 runs.
